Ever growing power of Google attracts political concerns and criticism.

The blog post of today is my comment I dropped on TechCrunch

Everyone loves TechCrunch. It is a bit grown to an empire by itself. That’s the way of network dynamics: Hubs emerge and alter the graph like a black hole changes the grid of space and time around. But anyway, TechCrunch is still really one of the top five relevant hubs for discussion and insight concerning serious web issues. One post of today made some wave (see the comment count as an indicator) and I commented on this. Comments are not quite dead (but there is a shrinking trend … Comments Dead, Twitter Holds Smoking Gun).

TC: The Time Has Come To Regulate Search Engine Marketing And SEO

Find this interesting article at techcrunch. The headline says it all. Good argumentation. It is really a bit alarming, that the guest author is writing anonymous. For more Google watching just google “googlewatch” :) and find serious places like googlewatch.eweek.com.

Google Watch – Googleopoly – Should Antitrust Laws Be Amended to Consider Google’s Use of Free? http://googlewatch.eweek.com/content/googleopoly/should_antitrust_laws_be_amended_to_consider_googles_use_of_free.html

My Comment

(Looking for the source? It is page 2, ca. comment no. 100 techcrunch)

Dear Anonymous,
Google is not as stupid and fierce as the Cosa Nostra, to evidently put harm to people, who say something against them.

But I completely understand your fear. It is the part of the problem!

Google has grown to a superpower with perfect dominance not only in the ecommerce field, but
it is one of the most admired and powerful companies in the world concerning INNOVATION power! And with a reason – I do admire Google too in this respect! Their strategy, vision and great R&D.

BUT ….
Google is acting like a state, making peace around its borders. So even the admiration can be seen as the part of the strategic game.

Cam head for Google's controversial Street View (googlewatchblog.de)

Is Google totalizing the infosphere? Cam head for Google's controversial Street View (googlewatchblog.de)

Michael Arrington’s post made the point: Organize All The World’s Information, Then Put Google Ads On It

My comment there:

Google quietly changed from time to time. The “official mission” of organising the worlds information is no lie, but it is the half truth only, as you point out. Google is an advertising company – THE advertising company of the world.

I count it on my fingers. We will see perfectly contextual mobile advertsing FOR EVERYONE soon, for every local business – easy as an Adwords account – it will be an extension of it.

And there is still the dilemma at the core of the business model of Google: Do not make your search results too good to keep the click-through-rate high because this is just the source of revenue. Null sum dilemma. …

Some more musings about Google’s roadmap

Up to now the business model was primarily about online advertising. But exactly in which sense? The brilliance of the Google business model was to run “micro auctions” in the attention hungry attention economy (i.e. Adwords). Every big and small business searching desperately for the “customer one click away” competing with all the other businesses and products. Read the rest of this entry »

Freebase Parallax: A new way to browse and explore data from David Huynh on Vimeo.

FACT: There are some projects, which want to be Google killers – for good reasons. But Google’s advance in user base, intellectual property , human capital and financial power is discouraging.

Is this a hot summer for so called Google killers? Some days ago Cuil (spell “cool”) was launched. They are searching 121,617,892,992 web pages, the front page says. That must be the “Deep Web”, which we analysts and researcher would like so much to have on our fingertips. But the galactic volume of the index is worth nothing, when other factors are not in tune. And keep in mind the immense power of Google. They have and hold the user base, Yahoo and MSN only knocking at the door …

CONTEXT: Desparately searching the weakness of market dominant search company Google

A lot of people worldwide think about the Achilles heel of Google – and may be there is more than one. Just remind the privacy issue and the (knowledge) power concentration which is unprecedented in history. It would be devastating for Google’s business model, if the users are seriously losing trust.

“Google is slowly embracing a full-blown behavioral targeting over its vast network of services and sites,” said Jeffrey Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy. He said that Google, through its vast data collection and sophisticated data analysis tools, “knows more about consumers than practically anyone.” August 12, 2008 Web firms acknowledge tracking behavior without consent – Los Angeles Time
